Seems like the entire Hollywood is squeezing into video game consoles. This summer we saw Indy, Tony Stark aka Ironman and Prince Caspian make the transition to console with panache. The next one to follow in their footsteps is super spy Jason Bourne of Robert Ludlum’s the Bourne Conspiracy, a retread of the 2002 action movie “The Bourne Identity.”

The Bourne Conspiracy, sans Matt Damon, is a simple, yet immensely entertaining game that gives the players the experience of becoming a 30 million dollar elite agent, set out to kill a guy named Wambosi. In this addictive brutal and gratifying combat, you get to travel to a variety of locations and beat the crap out of evildoers, blasting them with weapon and crushing their skulls with vicious hand-to-hand combat. In addition, the game features driving sequences that, while not as good as the fighting, offer you a chance to cause multiple accidents and evade the law en route to explosive finishes. Hand-to-hand fighting works best, thanks to an adrenaline meter that lets you perform a variety of painful takedowns on your enemies. The tense music and great sound effects captures the excitement of the films. The few places where it stumbles are more than made up by the polish and attention to detail everywhere else.

It is good enough to truly impress you for a while, but not enough to compel you to punch, kick, and shoot all the way to the end of the game. The standard issue punches and kicks, combined with the bizarre decision to ignore the left trigger while shooting makes the game frustrating. There is no character development and plot comes in little snippets that fail to coalesce into an actual story. Despite its shortcomings, the Bourne Conspiracy is a very good movie-license game with thrilling hand-to-hand combat, slick presentation, and relatively short time commitment which make it a perfect rental for fans of the films.
