Wii and PS3 sales boost Game's profits Review

Pre-tax profits at Game Group, the computer console and game retailer, soared by more than 150pc last year, on the back of a 41pc rise in like-for-like sales, in what chairman Peter Lewis labelled an "outstanding" year.

Sales for the current year started strongly and will have been further boosted by Monday night's release of Grand Theft Auto 4. The game is expected to become the best-selling computer game of all time.

The strong Game figures follow huge growth across the computer games industry over the last year, spurred by the launch of popular consoles such as Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PS3.

The consoles are credited with increasing the appeal of gaming to a far wider audience than has traditionally been the case. Last year, sales of computer games overtook sales of recorded music for the first time.
